We Cling to the Earth by Frances Watts

These works explore the ways familiar landscapes shape how we feel and who we become. Through the acts of looking and remembering, the known world shifts: an entirely new landscape emerges, one layered with memory, experience, and imagination.

‘We cling to the Earth ‘ are words borrowed from Ted Hughes - a poet who held a profound respect for the complicated dialogue between landscape and man. These are words that speak to the quiet exchange between body and ground. To stand in a landscape, to notice its elements and rhythms, is to be literally and emotionally grounded - and humbled.

Each piece traces this relationship between place and self: the pull of horizons walked before, the weight carried by soil and sky, the tenderness held in ordinary terrain. These landscapes are not simply seen; they are felt, remembered, and remade.
