Frances Watts is a Somerset based artist, inspired by the shifting colours and shapes of the rolling landscapes of the South West.
 
For several years now Frances Watts has revisited the same places to paint over and over again. They are often the very places where her children play and run, poke and rummage amongst the seeds and the leaves, the sludge and the soil. Always using colour as an emotional language, her work is a response to the echoes of the past, the textures, the sounds and the smells of beloved locations, landscapes that are always changing and yet always familiar. All are part of an ongoing body of work that represents the passage of time, the sanctity of place and the ritual progress of the changing seasons.

Often working en plein air, when outside Frances paints at a fast pace, invariably using a palette knife or a large brush to respond to her surroundings with vibrancy and texture.  Employing vivid and striking colour palettes such as warm purples and sludgy greens on board, Frances' works result in a refreshing, abstract, and modern twist on traditional landscape painting.
